No siempre me interesaron los árboles. Y aunque tampoco eran absolutamente indiferentes, su presencia era más evidente como elemento de una escena que por ellos mismos. Incluso así, los advertí muchas veces majestuosos, antiguos, misteriosos y callados, pero no pensaba en ellos por su nombre.

Una selva impenetrable en el Congo o en la Amazonía, o quizá un antiguo bosque húmedo en Centroamérica, la infinita tundra ártica de Canadá o los bosques boreales del norte de Europa. Todos ellos habitan en mi mente desde hace mucho, pero aunque parezca una contradicción, no eran árboles. Eran sistemas enormes, complejos y maravillosos que por su magnitud y belleza, son un conjunto donde apenas queda espacio para pensar en singular.

En un esfuerzo de la memoria, sé que la sombra de un árbol fue un refugio en muchos momentos. Sé también que el enorme pino fuera de la ventana de casa de mi abuela, puebla los recuerdos de mis tardes de infancia, con luces y sombras cambiantes sobre el muro al que miré mientras jugaba. Aún recuerdo que muchas veces soñé la casa del árbol y que aunque no era el árbol al que deseaba, el árbol ya estaba ahí y sin él no habría casa ni el niño que la soñaba.

El material del que estamos hechos a veces nos empuja. Hace 25 años, a mí me pidió que sin plan y sin mucha coherencia, fuera a Mineral del Chico1. Jamás había estado allí ni me lo habían recomendado. Pero leí algo que terminó por imaginarme ahí mismo: a ese lugar se llegaba por un camino plagado de curvas custodiadas por un enorme bosque. Hoy sé que eran pinos, cedros y encinos, quizá oyameles. Ese viaje no fue sólo uno más, sino que he pasado la vida buscando lo que encontré aquella vez.

La singularidad se presentó poco a poco y una de sus primeras formas sería la de un ahuehuete o sabino. Sin saberlo entonces, estaba frente al árbol con mayor circunferencia en el planeta2. Monumental y silencioso, ha impuesto su sorda persistencia en una escala que supera todos nuestros primeros pensamientos sobre él.

Leí por ahí que todos deberíamos tener un árbol favorito. Quizá un día lo tenga, pero hoy no es uno sino muchos. El árbol milenario de Concá es el último de ellos. Otro sabino.

En el bosque los árboles tienen un poder sobrenatural: ser uno y todos a la vez. Con suficiente tiempo e intención algún día encontrarás a uno que será el bosque pero también él, diferente y único. No quisiera que se olvide que todos son irrepetibles y que tienen su propio nombre, pero sólo algunos tienen dos: su nombre y el que sólo tú conoces. Si un día encuentras uno al que puedas llamarlo de una manera en que nadie lo ha nombrado, estarás aprendiendo otra lengua de la que apenas conoces unas letras.

Occupied for more than three thousand years and located in Belize, Lamanai was one of the longest continuously inhabited Maya sites. The New River snakes through the site, almost inviting you to approach by water rather than land—a wise choice, since depending on the time of year, the rough, muddy roads might require a vehicle capable of handling challenging terrain.

I could say that the magic begins on that river. But that would be either a lie—or, at best, an inaccuracy. Belize remains a mystery to much of the world. It’s better known for its stunning islands than for its mainland. In Latin America, it’s a country few talk about, and even fewer visit. Even its immediate neighbors often regard it cautiously, and a significant portion of the Mexican border population has barely ventured into Belize—aside from the free zone and its casino.

For me, the magic begins at the border crossing. From the very first time—and despite the warmth of the people—it was a small challenge to navigate the instructions given by Belizean agents, whose English I could barely understand given that my English isn’t particularly strong and their accent was new to me, and where everything seemed to follow a kind of cheerful improvisation that somehow made everyone involved smile. As a curious side note, the first time I entered, I did so driving a 2012 VW Beetle. During inspection, the officer asked me to open the hood to check for any belongings. He was surprised to find the engine there and asked why it was in the front. To him, a Beetle was still the original rear-engine model, and it was clear he had never seen a New Beetle—even though that model had been around since 1998.
Not just because of this incident, but even in general, it always felt to me that time moved differently in Belize.

I arrived by river. And that’s how you should reach Lamanai too—because it’s part of the magic. You know the river is full of crocodiles, but it’s one of the "prices" you gladly pay to stand before a four-meter-high stucco mask—one of the best preserved and largest in the entire Maya world still accessible to us.

I treasure every memory from this trip, but one event in particular, left a permanent mark—something that, at the time, I had no idea would be so remarkable. After visiting the site, my wife and I returned to our hotel along the riverbank. We sat on a bench located on a raised platform, a few meters above the river, built to prevent floods from reaching the hotel. It was about two meters high, ending abruptly like the edge of a rooftop at a 90-degree angle. We sat there talking for about an hour and even exchanged a few words with an American journalist staying at the same hotel.
As we were getting ready to leave, my wife approached the edge to snap a photo of the river. Just then, a loud, startling noise shattered the calm. Had I not been watching, I would have thought a car had fallen into the water. But I was sitting there, looking straight at the scene, and still couldn’t immediately understand what had just happened.

What had happened was that a huge crocodile, which had been resting silently on the concrete wall just beneath us, had suddenly launched itself into the river. Somehow, this crocodile had been silently listening to our entire conversation, and none of us had noticed it was there.

In the end, it slipped back into the water—the same place all the crocodiles of this incredible land come from. Because Lamanai’s name comes from the original Maya word Lama'an'ain, which means "submerged crocodile."

Ocupado durante más de tres mil años y ubicado en Belice, Lamanai fue uno de los sitios mayas habitados de forma continua por más tiempo. El New River serpentea el sitio y pareciera invitar a que tomes ese acceso y evites la entrada por tierra que, según la época del año, podría requerir un vehículo capaz de cruzar lodazales y caminos en mal estado.

Podría decir que la magia comienza en ese río. Pero mentiría o en el mejor caso sería inexacto. Belice es un misterio para gran parte del mundo. Es más conocido por sus bellísimas islas que por su porción continental. Para Latinoamérica, éste es un país del que se habla poco y todavía se visita menos. Sus vecinos más próximos lo miran de reojo y un porcentaje importante de la zona fronteriza de México apenas ha entrado a Belice -descontando la zona libre y su casino.

Para mí la magia comienza desde el cruce fronterizo. Desde la primera ocasión y a pesar de su amabilidad fue un reto sortear las instrucciones de los agentes beliceños a los que les entendía poco y donde todo parecía guiado por una improvisación desconcertante que de una forma u otra obligaba a asomar una sonrisa en todos los involucrados. Como dato curioso, la primera vez que ingresé lo hice con un VW Beetle 2012 y quien inspeccionó el vehículo me pidió abrir el cofre del auto esperando revisar los objetos que trajera conmigo. Se sorprendió mucho al notar que en el cofre venía efectivamente el motor y preguntó que por qué estaba así. Para él, el Beetle seguía siendo el original Escarabajo con el motor trasero y es de suponer que jamás había visto un New Beetle a pesar de ser un modelo que había visto la luz desde 1998. Naturalmente que no sólo por esto, pero siempre me pareció que la marcha del tiempo no seguía las normas en Belice.

Llegué por el río. Y así es como debes llegar a Lamanai en tanto es parte de la magia. Sabes que está plagado de cocodrilos y es uno de los costos por estar frente a un mascarón de cuatro metros que es de los mejor conservados y de los más grandes en el mundo maya al que aún podemos acceder.

Todas las memorias de este viaje las guardo con aprecio pero un evento en particular quedó marcado para siempre por la enorme casualidad que supuso y que en su momento desconocía. Después de visitar el sitio, mi esposa y yo volvimos al hotel que se encontraba sobre la rivera del río. Nos sentamos en una banca que se encontraba en el nivel del hotel que obviamente era superior al del río para evitar que una crecida del agua inundara las instalaciones. Eran unos dos metros de alto que terminaban abruptamente como si fuera la azotea de una casa con ángulo de 90 grados. Platicamos alrededor de una hora e incluso intercambiamos algunas palabras con una periodista estadounidense que se alojaba allí también. Cuando nos disponíamos a irnos, mi esposa se acercó a la orilla de esta superficie y justo antes de tomar una foto del río, se escuchó un ruido escandaloso.

Sin estar viendo la escena, hubiera imaginado a un auto cayendo al agua. Pero estaba viendo la escena sentado y no entendí que podría explicar lo que acababa de escuchar.
Mi esposa acababa de ver saltar al agua a un cocodrilo enorme que reposaba sobre la pared de concreto. De alguna manera, este cocodrilo había escuchado sigilosamente toda nuestra conversación y nadie había advertido su presencia.

Al final, se sumergió y volvió al lugar del que vienen todos los cocodrilos de este increíble lugar, porque Lamanai proviene de la palabra maya original Lama'an'ain que significa "cocodrilo sumergido".

The first time I visited Mahahual1, I was genuinely surprised. I had heard of it almost like a whisper. "Have you ever been to Mahahual?" more than one person had asked me. And the general advice was that I should set aside some time to visit, enjoy the sea, maybe spend a weekend there—but not much more.
But just a weekend? It always throws me off a little when someone says there's “nothing there” or that a weekend is enough. Why, though?

Trying to fully understand what’s behind a “there’s nothing there” isn’t easy—and probably can’t be explained the same way for everyone. Still, recommending a place where "there’s nothing" and suggesting just a short visit seemed to go against the very idea that, at least for me, inspires a journey.

I don't want to come across as someone who just doesn’t get it. But honestly, it's hard for me to imagine recommending a place and immediately warning someone not to expect much because, well, there’s nothing.
If you're the kind of traveler who enjoys places off the beaten path, you probably already know: a place where there’s “nothing” often means it has everything—everything that hasn’t yet been seen, touched, or exploited by mass tourism.

It may also depend on the country you live in, but today, places where "there’s nothing" are becoming harder and harder to find. Maybe it’s because of safety concerns that make it unwise to venture too far. Or maybe it's the difficulty of the terrain, the limitations of your vehicle, or even your own health that might prevent you from reaching such places.
But mostly, places like that are disappearing—falling to trends, mass tourism, the exploitation of natural areas for resource extraction, land sales, or simply the effects of climate change. One reason, or a combination of many, continues to chip away at the wild, untouched parts of our planet.

Mahahual was never the most remote place. Even back then—many years ago—it wasn’t a place where there was truly "nothing" (though there was very little). It wasn’t the world’s best-kept secret either.
Still, it was beautiful. Removed from the noise (aside from the occasional cruise ship that would sometimes arrive), free from mass tourism and trends.
It was the natural gateway to Banco Chinchorro—the second-largest coral reef system in the world. Back then, there were no chain hotels, no towering buildings, no aggressive street vendors. Just a handful of people who had made it their temporary or semi-permanent home. People for whom "nothing" meant everything: isolation, silence, peace.

It was one of those rare places where I truly lost track of time and days. And I miss it.
Though, as it’s often said, we only truly miss what no longer exists.

La primera vez que visité Mahahual1 quedé sorprendido. Sabía de él casi por rumores. ¿Ya has visitado Mahahual? me había preguntado más de uno. Y la consigna era que debería de dedicar un tiempo para ir y disfrutar del mar o incluso pasar un fin de semana pero no más. Pero ¿sólo un fin de semana? Siempre me descoloca cuando alguien dice que en un lugar “no hay nada” o que un fin de semana basta. Pero, ¿por qué?

Intentar comprender lo que hay detrás del no hay nada probablemente no se explique universalmente. Sin embargo recomendar ir donde no hay nada y pasar un fin de semana o simplemente sugerir visitarlo aunque fuera un sólo día parecía chocar con mi forma de entender la voluntad que, al menos a mí, me lleva a un destino.

Tampoco quiero hacerme pasar por el que no lo entiende en absoluto. Sin embargo difícilmente me imagino recomendando un lugar donde cierre mis palabras advirtiendo que no deberías esperar mucho puesto que no hay nada. Si eres un viajero que gusta de aquellos sitios fuera de la ruta principal, puedes delinear con mediana exactitud que donde no hay nada es un lugar donde probablemente te gustaría estar en tanto que tiene el suficiente reconocimiento de ser un lugar, aunque en él no haya nada.

Y dependerá del país donde vivas, pero hoy un lugar donde no hay nada puede no ser accesible por innumerables razones. La seguridad de tu region no permite adentrarte en él, la dificultad del terreno impide que tu vehículo acceda a dicho lugar o tu propia salud o condición física sea una restricción insalvable para que alcances ese sitio. Sin embargo, cada vez existen menos de estos lugares. Las modas, el turismo masivo, la depredación de áreas naturales con el fin de favorecer extracción de recursos o el beneficio de la venta de la tierra. O simplemente el cambio climático. Cualquiera de ellas o una combinación de las mismas son las que poco a poco terminan con extensiones del planeta que son o fueron una maravilla.

Mahahual no es el lugar más remoto. Tampoco es un lugar donde en ese entonces (hace muchos años) no hubiera nada -aunque había realmente poco. Tampoco era el secreto mejor guardado. Sin embargo sí era muy bello. Alejado (con la excepción de algún crucero que eventualmente llegaba) del turismo masivo y de cualquier moda. Base natural para visitar Banco Chinchorro que es nada menos que el segundo arrecife de coral más grande del mundo. En aquél entonces sin hoteles de cadena, ni edificaciones con alturas descomunales ni vendedores ambulantes. Hogar temporal o semi permanente de un puñado de personas quienes donde no hay nada significa que tiene todo lo que aún no ha podido ver o explotar la industria del turismo masivo ni el de lujo. Por ejemplo: aislamiento, silencio y paz.

Uno de esos extraños lugares donde he perdido la noción del tiempo y de los días. Y lo extraño. Aunque como bien se dice, se extraña lo que ya no existe.

3. Be specific

Readers love clarity. Be clear when you explain what they should expect: how often will you be posting? Can they expect certain posts on specific days? What will the free subscribers get? What does a paid subscription buy them? (You can list these benefits in bullets.)

4. Use an image and “subscribe” buttons

A picture will look nicer when you share the post on your social media (click the image icon in the editor to search for copyright-free photos), and it will give color to your archive as you build it.
